AI trading risks: what to understand before you automate
AI trading combines ordinary market risk with model, data, software, and connectivity risk. An AI system can misunderstand a request, use incomplete inputs, or fail while a market is moving. Paper defaults, confirmation-first manual orders, limits, monitoring, and a kill switch address specific failure modes, but none removes the possibility of loss. Last updated 2026-09-01.
Prices can move against a position, spreads can widen, and an order may fill differently from the displayed quote or not fill at all. Options add expiration, assignment, exercise, volatility, and liquidity considerations. A model scenario or paper fill cannot reproduce every condition of a live order. Position sizing and a defined exit plan are decisions the user must make.
Language models can produce confident but incorrect explanations. Market data can be delayed, stale, incomplete, or unavailable. A provider outage, malformed response, application bug, or interrupted connection can affect a workflow at the wrong time. Deterministic calculations can still be wrong when their inputs or assumptions are wrong, and options Greeks change as conditions change.
A manual order and an armed autonomous strategy are different authorization paths. Manual equity orders use a preview and require explicit approval. A live strategy requires a separate opt-in and, once armed, can place or close orders within configured limits without a separate confirmation for each order. Users should understand that boundary before enabling live activity.
Start with paper mode, use conservative limits, inspect activity independently, and know how to stop a run and revoke a brokerage connection. Fincai shows unavailable data states, separates specialist analysis from model interpretation, and uses a dedicated options engine, but these controls do not make trading safe or suitable for every person.
